The museum’s makerspace is available to all visitors. It is located on the ground floor of Dunham Hall next to the accessible entrance.
Our makerspace specializes in the textile arts and technologies. Everything from spinning and weaving to knitting, crocheting, embroidery, and sewing is covered.
This space provides a perfect opportunity to learn. If you are curious about some equipment or technique you’ve never tried, or want to gain expertise in a particular domain, we probably have the resources you need.
Want to see what a Singer Featherweight is all about? Want to try weaving tapes on an Inkle loom? Want to compare a walking wheel, drop spindle and treadle wheel? We’ve got you covered.
For visiting school groups this space provides the opportunity for demonstrations and hands-on experience.
Feel free to spend a day on a project as well. We may have just the resources you need to complete a project or make a particular piece. We want the community to be able to use this space for their own projects.
Equipment
We have a variety of spinning and weaving equipment, sewing machines and accessories, as well as crochet, needlepoint, and knitting materials available.
In the spring of 2027 we expect to have many of our machines in our Dugan Hall industrial exhibit space running. These will expand our capability especially in the area of garment construction and heavy materials work. We have Merrow sergers, several industrial lockstitch machines, Union Special chainstitch and coverstitch machines, a leather patcher, and more.
